* * *

Tired and still aching, alternately crying and drying up, Jason drove the short distance to his office, wondering how or why he should carry on with his life's routine. Maybe this was the end of it. There really was no reason to stick with this business he had started. All he really wanted to do now was die at the same time he killed Zufar. Billy was gone, Susie was in the hospital, Roxanne was a treacherous bitch he would also kill, and only his friend Sali remained in his life. But there was Celine. Celine was nice; Celine was a beautiful, caring woman.

As he pulled up to his office he recognized two plain Fords with US Government license plates. He parked and walked in.

As he entered, they were all standing. Celine walked over to Jason, her eyes red from the crying and her face swollen. "Oh, Jason," she said, sniffling, "I'm so sorry." She wrapped her arms around him mid-body and hugged him, her cheek against his chest, and started sobbing again. He was surprised how good she felt and he hugged her back and kissed the top of her head.

Moments later, they separated and she stepped back, putting her hands up to his head but not touching the wounds.

"I'm okay," he said, "Really, I'll be okay."

Jason looked at the two men with Celine. The guy on Jason's left looked like he'd been trying for awhile to polish a relaxed formality—he had a tropical shirt on, obviously brand new by its shine, tucked into perfectly ironed slacks with an expensive new alligator belt. On Jason's right, the guy didn't care much how he looked—he wore blue jeans and a t-shirt with "Budweiser" written on the front. But he looked familiar.

Celine spoke up. "Jason, I don't know how to tell you this, but this," she said, pointing with her upturned palm to the neatly dressed man on the left, "is Special Agent in Charge, Sam Pecks of the FBI. I work for him."

Jason had been looking in the man's eyes as she said this, but then he turned in a start to look at her just as the man offered a hand to shake and an identification card in the other hand. Jason reached out and shook his hand once then dropped it immediately as he continued to look at her and not at the badge.

"You work for him?" he said. "You work for the FBI?"

Celine wiped her nose with a hankie pulled from somewhere, and continued to look Jason straight in the eye as she nodded ever so slightly. "I was actually planted here to keep an eye on you and report back if I heard any sign of Zufar making contact with you."

Jason's face reddened as he tried to control himself. "You knew about Zufar?" he said, his voice rising. "You've been lying to me all along?"

"Oh, no, Jason, please believe me: I didn't lie to you about everything. I mean, yes, I didn't let you know what we were doing, but I couldn't.
